Consultation Finds Scotland In Support Of Transgender Self-ID Law

A public consultation in Scotland on the Gender Recognition Act has found widespread support for self-ID reforms.

The Government requested public opinion on a devolved law in Scotland that would extend and streamline provisions in the Act.

Despite anti-transgender activists organising a mass of responses, the results show that a majority favoured change.

Published on Friday 23 November, it discovered that 60% of people back a "self-declaratory system for legal gender recognition" that would eliminate requirements for transgender people to obtain medical evidence.

61% supported proposed changes to allow transgender teens to make use of the gender recognition process from age 16, while 62% also believe that non-binary people should also be able to gain legal recognition.

The Scottish Government has explained that people backing self-ID changes generally felt that "the existing recognition process takes too long, is too difficult or too expensive".
