Study Shows Prognosis For Premature Babies Changes Rapidly After Birth

The long-term prognosis for extremely premature babies can change rapidly in the immediate days after birth, according to a recent study.

The research suggests that post-discharge care and counselling for families should be individualised to fit the circumstances of each infant.

The observational study used data from extremely preterm births, which applies to any child born earlier than 28 weeks.

It found that 82% (751) of premature babies were offered intensive care treatment, and 546 of those survived to age eight (73%).

Of the survivors, 17% had a major disability.

As the days go on following premature births, the probability of death decreases and chances of survival without a major disability increase.

When a baby is born with little gestational age, the probabilities of survival and major disabilities vary.
