Exercise Vital For A Healthy Pregnancy

Physical activity is a critical component of pregnancy and will lead to fewer complications, Canadian guidance claims.

The advice suggests that having an active pregnancy leads to better physical and emotional wellness for expectant mothers and better outcomes for babies.

In order to achieve these benefits, women with no medical restrictions should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, spread over a minimum of three days.

The guidelines have been issued following a joint initiative between the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

Mums-to-be can expect greater benefits if they exercise every day and incorporate a variety of aerobic and resistance training activities.

It was suggested that mothers who follow the guidance could reduce the risk of pregnancy-related illnesses such as depression by 25%, and gestational diabetes, high blood pressure or preeclampsia by 40%.
