Stopping Bedtime Stories Early 'Can Harm Children'

New research has claimed that parent's risk damaging their children's literacy if they stop reading with them too soon, typically by the age of seven.

In addition, around two-thirds of six-year-old's said they enjoy bedtime stories or other recreational reading with an adult.

The study, which was carried out by Oxford University Press (OUP), discovered however, that the figure falls to 44% among children who are one year older, as parents assume their help is no longer required when it comes to reading. Experts claim that continuing to read together throughout primary school is "vital" for children's development.

The findings follow studies which suggest children who read for pleasure, are more likely to do well at school, as well as later in life in the work place.

The survey of 1,000 children aged seven to 11, also found half of eight and nine year olds were rarely or never read to at home, while only a third of 10-year-olds spent time reading books with an adult.

James Clements, a former headteacher who worked with OUP on the study, said: "All the research proves that reading for pleasure is inextricably linked to attainment and benefits all aspects of children's lives.

"Parents need to understand the huge impact reading with their children can make and hot vital it is that reading for pleasure doesn't stop at the school gate but is continued at home.

"Just ten minutes of reading with their child every day is one of the best ways they can support their education."
