Vicar 'Too Drunk' To Carry Out Wedding

A vicar who was to officiate at a wedding in South Wales was too drunk to carry out the ceremony, according to a report in The Sun.

Usher Rhodri Jones was the first to notice something out of place.

He explained: "I will never forget seeing the vicar zigzag down the hill to the church with his gown blowing in the wind and rain.

"He got to the gate but couldn't stop himself and nearly fell down a bank. The photographer asked him if he was OK, and he replied, 'Not quite'.

"He walked past me like Jack Sparrow, tripped over the step into the church and fell through the door in front of 96 people."

Vicar Brian Taylor was supposed to marry Chris John and his fiancée Lori Collins, but a friend of the groom added: "The vicar cut his hand. He was wearing a big white gown and had blood on him. "One of the choir people took him to the vestry, then explained he was unwell and they'd have to get someone else.

"The bride waited in the car while the groom was pacing back and forth inside. They waited about half an hour. “Usually they go into the vestry to sign the register book. But they had to bring it out and sign it in front of everybody."

It is understood that after Reverend Taylor tripped in the aisle, he was guided into a sideroom, and as a replacement was found to conduct the service in the form of Reverend Gareth Cousins, and guests tried not to show their amusement as the vicar began to shout and sing from behind the locked vestry door.

One of the comments he is said to have shouted, is: "In the name of the Lord, I’m not drunk. There's nothing wrong with me. I want to do the wedding."

Chris and Lori, both 24 and from Treorchy, South Wales, spent more than £20,000 on their big day.

Speaking after, the groom is quoted as saying: "We had a wonderful day anyway. In hindsight it was quite funny."

Mr Taylor, who is said to have celebrated his 52nd birthday two days before the wedding, said he was not able to comment on the matter as" "It's in the hands of the Archbishop now."

A spokeswoman for the diocese said: "This is a very unfortunate incident and we are investigating. We are sincerely sorry for any upset or inconvenience caused."
