Anger Over Forces' Same-Sex Marriages

Government plans to allow gay marriages in Armed Forces chapels was met with fury when it was announced yesterday.

According to the Express, details of the Coalition's Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill revealed that gay and lesbian couples could be allowed to marry in Army, Navy and RAF places of worship.

The Church of England, Catholic churches and mosques will not have to stage the ceremonies, however Armed Forces chapels will not be exempt under the new rules. They are owned by the State and open to worshippers of different faiths.

The Bill says that the Defence Secretary may apply to the Registrar General for a chapel "to be registered for the solemnisation of marriage of same sex couples."

However, opponents of the Prime Minister's aim to legalise gay marriage were angered by the news.

Colin Hart, campaign director of the Coalition for Marriage protest group, said: "At a time when the Government is sacking thousands of members of the Armed Forces, scrapping ships, planes and tanks, I’m surprised the Ministry of Defence does not have more important things to worry about.

"This policy is driven by political correctness and will have dire consequences. Making these changes would lead to military and other chaplains being sacked if they oppose gay marriage."

While Senior Tory MP and former Defence Minister, Sir Gerald Howarth, added: "Nothing better illustrates how the state is now embarked on a course to undermine the Christian view of marriage."

The same-sex marriage Bill was re-introduced into the Commons on Monday for the new Parliamentary session.
