Gay Marriage Supporter Offered Job Back

The president of a university for the deaf and heard of hearing in the US has called for the return of one of its staff members after she was put on leave for publicly supporting gay marriage.

The controversy began when Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz put chief diversity officer Angela McCaskill on paid leave following revelations she had signed a petition for Maryland’s new same-sex marriage law to be put to a referendum vote.

Following her departure from her duties, support for Ms McCaskill flooded the internet, with both opponents and supporters of gay marriage calling for her to be reinstated.

Hurwitz released a statement this morning confirming he wants Ms McCaskill to return to the university and continue as chief diversity officer.

The statement said: "Dr. McCaskill has been, and can continue to be, a valued member of this community and we are very much interested in working with everyone to come to a shared understanding in an environment that allows the community to rebound and move forward.

"I am sending this communication to indicate forcefully that Gallaudet University would like to work with its Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Angela McCaskill, to enable her to return to the community from her administrative leave."

President Hurwitz said he had only placed her on leave as a measure to allow the initial reactions to subside.

He said: "My practice, which I will continue, is to reach out to the campus community to ensure that we are acting with their best interests in mind. To accomplish that, dialogs among those with differing views are common on our campus as a way of fostering understanding of the opinions, and the individuals holding them, which are different from ours."
