Get Ahead With Fascinators

Should you decide that you are most definitely not a 'hat person' but feel the necessity for some form of head adornment then the fascinator is the choice for you.

The perfect hat or fascinator turns the simplest of outfits into something that little bit extra special. Finding the perfect head adornment can be a scary prospect, especially if you don't consider yourself to be a 'hat person’. However if you look back over the history of fashion, hats were as common in the last century as jeans are today. One would not have set foot over the door without a hat as you were simply considered in a state of undress. With that in mind setting to work on finding the right, look should not be such a monumental task.

Should you decide that you are most definitely not a 'hat person', but feel the necessity for some form of head adornment, then the fascinator is the choice for you. These cute little hair combs, delicately embellished with feathers and beads, are an ideal choice to brighten up a summer dress. They banish the dreaded hat hair and can be worked into almost any hairstyle by an experienced hairdresser. Some larger fascinators may come attached to a hair band and look almost like a small hat. A clever stylist can banish the band into obscurity, giving a flawless finish to complement your overall look.

The first thing to consider on the quest for the perfect head covering, is the amount of pictures that you will be in. Mother's of the bride and groom need to be extra careful as they will be photographed regularly over the course of the day. Choosing a black/dark coloured hat or one with a down turned brim, may cast an unsightly dark shadow across your face. Wedding photographs will be around for many years to come and the grandchildren of the future will want to see how happy you are on your little one's big day.

The next element that needs your consideration is the shape of your face. There is little point in trying to find the perfect colour if, when you adorn your head with the item in question you end up looking two feet tall. You need to make sure that the hat you choose not only complements your face, but also the style of outfit you choose to wear.

Our simple guide will put you ahead of the game.

Round Face

Consider styles with soft rounded crowns and brims, loosely woven in straw or soft fabrics. Your hat should be worn at an angle for maximum impact. Look for styles that are longer on one side.

Oval Face

This is the face shape best suited to hats. For this reason you can pull off almost any style. However if you are petite be wary of styles with a down turned brim, as these will draw the eye towards the floor effectively making you appear smaller in stature. Oval faces should wear their hat so that it sits straight across the brow/hairline.

Square Face

Asymmetrical looks are perfect. They draw the line of light across your face and soften your jawbone. Try to look for tilted designs and slanted brims. Your face also lends itself nicely to beautiful earrings. Teaming your hat with a pair of elegant drop earrings will give you an ultimate glamour finish worthy of a Hollywood starlet.

Triangular Face

Like those with an oval face, you are blessed with a bone structure designed for millinery. However, be careful that the crown of your hat is never narrower than your face. Be sure to wear your final adornment straight across the brow or hairline. More mature ladies should note that it is advisable to look for an upturned brim as this will draw the eye up and away from the neck area. This is particularly good if your are self conscious about double chins, heavy jowls or simply have a short neck.

Oblong Face

Tall and narrow hats should be avoided as these will elongate your features to cartoon like levels. Look for a design with a stylish brim. Your face shape lends itself particularly well to this feature. Try to ensure that you create a balanced clean line between your shoulders and the rest of your body.

Whether you choose to go hat or fascinator, it is worth remembering that neither can be considered an investment buy. You need to consider the wear to cost ratio. Spending a little more money on a bespoke hat can make a big difference to a plain outfit. However, it is worth considering that the same statement, can be made equally well using a contrasting colour. Take time to shop around and find a look that compliments both your outfit and your budget.

Finding the right size of hat is not as difficult as it would seem. Whether you choose to buy bespoke from a designer or off the peg at a high street store, it is a good idea to know your measurements. To discover this, simply take a measuring tape and place it on your forehead. Wrap the tape around the circumference of your head above your ears until both ends meet at the nape of your neck. Mark the end and remove. This is your hat size. Don't stress too much about getting the measurements perfect as you will be able to try most hats in store and milliners should take their own measurements to double check. Should your final choice of hat prove too big, stress not. Look at the interior of the hat, you should see clearly a ribbon. By simply attaching a piece of elastic ribbon to this using a running stitch, most hats can be decreased in size by up to 5cm, depending on the tension you apply to the elastic.
